The First Appointment

As usual, it was a rushed morning. I'm surprised Wyatt's first words weren't "Hurry up, we're late!" As I sat in the driver's seat, I took a deep breath and said a prayer. This moment was the beginning an adventure I had traveled once before.
The faces at the office were unfamiliar at first. Paperwork was filled out, and money was due up front, not a surprise. But then as I gave the nurse my clipboard, I looked through the partition to see Dr. Shapiro with his bald head and bow tie smiling at me. I waved and he exclaimed across the office, "Hi Sommer! How are you?" Whew, that's right. They know my name. I've been here before and I survived all of this before.
After a visit with the doctor, we saw more and more familiar faces, and with each face and hug, I grew calmer. But then my blood lady was gone. The one who all the times she had to take my blood, I never felt the needle. She knew how to keep talking to me about mundane, everyday topics while the blood filled those little round tubes. I missed those things as I had to explain to the new lady that I can't stand watching the needle go in, and to not be alarmed when I close my eyes, EVERY TIME. The one amazing thing that made this time around different, was my sweet hearted little boy, sitting with his dad on a bench in the hallway, saying to me, "Look Mommy! You got a band aid! We can put a Diego one (band aid) over it!" With that kind of cheering section, this time may be easier than last time, at least for today!
